New at the Vineyard Haven Public Library: Library Document Station

The Vineyard Haven Public Library is pleased to announce the arrival of the Library Document Station. The Document Station is an easy-to-use, self-service book and document scanning system, that guides the user seamlessly through the scanning process, including the choice of file formats, scan quality, and destination.

You may scan books and documents into PDF, searchable PDF, Word, JPEG, TIFF and PNG file formats by simply touching the screen for the preferred file format. Searchable PDF files allow you to search for any word in the PDF file or copy text from it.

Scanned documents may be printed in color or black and white for 25 cents per page. If you prefer to save paper, you will be happy to know that scanned files may be sent to a USB Flash drive, to Email, to a SmartPhone or Tablet, or to Google Drive and Skydrive.

Please come in to Library and give the Document Station a try. If you need a tutorial, a member of the staff will be happy to help.

The Library Document Station was donated by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library.

The Peter H. Luce Play Readers perform "The Whole Shebang"

"It's a witty, whimsical, charming one-act play." --New York Daily News

Rich Orloff's comic one-act play "The Whole Shebang" will be performed as a staged reading on Sunday, December 1st at 2pm at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. The play will feature performers from the Peter H. Luce Play Readers, directed by Leslie J. Stark. The cast includes Sofia Anthony, Elaine Bart, Ellie Beth, Jay Sigler, Leslie J. Stark, and Eric Turner. The program is presented by the Friends of the Library as part of their monthly "Sunday with Friends" series. The reading is free and refreshments will be served.

"The Whole Shebang" asks the question, "What if the entire universe was just some nerd's science project?" In a classroom in a dimension far beyond ours, a student striving for a "Master of the Universe" degree gives an oral presentation on an unusual thesis -- the creation of the heavens and the earth. Two professors and a dean interrogate the student and his two visual aids, a "typical" man and woman.

For nearly 15 years, the Peter H Luce Play Readers have met every Wednesday of the year at the Vineyard Haven Senior Center from 9AM to Noon to read plays of every era and of every genre, from the Greek and Roman classics to the cutting-edge works of contemporary playwrights... and everything in between: Shakespeare, Shaw, Chekhov, Moliere, Miller, Ibsen Albee, O'Neil, Pinter and Neil Simon. The group is named for its founder, Peter Luce, who died in 2007.

Future "Sunday with Friends" programs planned for this winter include craft workshops for adults, a talk by Betsy Bray on Beatrix Potter, and a travel presentation by Joe Doebler on sailing the Mediterranean. Check the schedule at the library or on our website for details on these and other free programs.

The Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library encourage public understanding of the Library's vital role in the community, support activities for both adults and children, and provide various other volunteer services. Their mission is to support the Library, to build a partnership between the Library and the community and to advocate for exemplary library service. All volunteers and those who are interested in knowing more about the Friends meet at 1:00 pm on the fourth Monday of every month (except December) at the library.

Produced by special arrangement with Playscripts, Inc. (www.playscripts.com)

"Rich Orloff's charming and whimsical comedy about the creation of the universe delivers impish fun, along with a thoughtful and provocative message. Orloff brings a witty and engaging innocence to the excellent script." --Variety

CLAMS Libraries Earn Stars From Library Journal

We're happy to share that the Vineyard Haven Public Library has once again been named one of 263 "star" libraries (out of 7,573 rated) in Library Journal's annual rating of U.S. public libraries. The rating is based on four per-capita public service indicators—circulation, visits, program attendance, and public Internet use—from 2011 data collected by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. There are eleven "star" libraries in Massachusetts, also including the West Tisbury Library on Martha's Vineyard. Nine of the eleven Massachusetts star libraries are members of the CLAMS network.
