Learn the basics of having a lawn that’s safe for children, pets, and ponds.

A Vineyard Lawn uses no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers, and only occasional watering if truly necessary. Mixed grass varieties and native plantings are hardier, better adapted to local conditions, and require less time and attention. And a Vineyard Lawn will always be safe for kids, pets, and wildlife – no need to check product labels and Google for the latest news on potential health effects.

In addition to the presentation, come see the Vineyard Conservation Society’s “Vineyard Lawns” display at the library throughout the month of April. This includes a 3-panel display (a blue ribbon winner at the Fair!), educational handouts, and book recommendations.
VHLibraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13514342612909778276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4144151841842274856.post-18511166593528863472024-03-05T17:03:00.002-05:002024-03-08T13:21:53.015-05:00Eclipse Viewing and Activities for April 8th Solar Eclipse

On April 8th, 2024, a solar eclipse will pass over the northeastern United States.

While Martha's Vineyard will only experience a partial eclipse, we will see a 92% obscuration, much greater than the 65% obscuration during the 2017 solar eclipse!

Locally the eclipse will begin at 2:16 pm, with maximum obscuration at 3:29 pm.

The library will host a viewing party and have eclipse glasses available for library patrons on the day of the eclipse. Artists featured in the Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) may have struck a different balance. In this fun and funny presentation led my Michael Frank, MOBA Curator in Chief, each MOBA piece is shown alongside the classic art that inspired it. You decide -- is this genius? Register: bit.ly/49iyKEc

The Museum Of Bad Art collects, exhibits, and celebrates art that will be seen in no other venue. Since 1993, they have collected art from thrift stores, yard sales, sidewalk trash, and even the artists who create it. They analyze, compare to classic art, and share with thousands of fans around the world.

Michael Frank, MOBA Curator in Chief, studied under the strict tutelage of the founding Esteemed Curator. Mr. Frank now heads the entire department. His appointment was partially due to his record of contributing more art to MOBA than any other donor. A professional musician, he lives in Boston.

This program is brought to you by the West Tisbury, Edgartown and Vineyard Haven Public Libraries.
VHLibraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13514342612909778276noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4144151841842274856.post-3673939017968186362024-02-03T15:21:00.002-05:002024-02-11T10:48:53.950-05:00Community Event: MV Ballroom Musical Sunday Afternoons
Come to dance, or just to listen!

An afternoon of off-season dancing and music, performed by your local favorites! Curran, retired Justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court.

The issue of slavery versus freedom rears its ugly head in this first civil rights trial in American history, more than two decades before the Civil War explodes in 1861. This case pits the American government against the Spanish government, the President against his own Secretary of State, the executive branch versus the judicial branch, and abolitionists against slave traders. It even prompted a former President to appear before the Supreme Court to condemn the policies of a present Administration. This case finally received the recognition it deserved from Stephen Spielberg’s 1997 Academy Award-nominated feature film, Amistad.

The Honorable Dennis J. Curran was an associate justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court, appointed to the seat by former governor Mitt Romney in 2006. He has taught the practice of Political Science and Law at Tufts University and Roger Williams University of Law. While the DPW focuses on the drains on the busiest streets, TWI volunteers (like you!) who join the program, can maintain stormwater drains on neighborhood streets.
<span face=""Arial",sans-serif" style="background: white; color: #272727; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 107%;">The United States and Middle
East are at a crossroads. In spite of a reduced presence in the Middle East,
the U.S. still has significant national interests there and the area is a key
arena for global power politics. Can the U.S. continue to defend its interests
in the Middle East and globally with a lower level of military and political involvement,
or should it recommit to a leading role in the region?

Session Two, February 8, 6 pm: Climate Technology and Competition

<span face=""Arial",sans-serif" style="background: white; color: #272727; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 107%;">Will the United States and
China, with other powerful countries following suit, approach current and
future climate initiatives with an increased commitment to trade protectionism
and nationalism, by various measures including trade restrictions? Or could a
growing spirit of international accord develop to confront the “common enemy”
of climate change?

Session Three, February 15, 6 pm: Science Across Borders

<span face=""Arial",sans-serif" style="background: white; color: #272727; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 107%;">Scientific advances benefit
from collaboration between researchers, but what happens when material, such as
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is controversial and important to a nation’s
national security? Is there a middle ground between sharing information and
denying access? How can we regulate cooperation?

Session Four, February 22, 6 pm: US-China Trade Rivalry

<span face=""Arial",sans-serif" style="background: white; color: #272727; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 107%;">China’s economic rise and
its current policies of increasing the role of the state in the economy have
led some U.S. policymakers to seek to deny China access to U.S. technology and
investment. This is seen as a necessary corrective to decades of predatory
Chinese economic policies. Is this a wise strategy, and how effective can it
be?

Session Five, February 29, 6 pm: NATO’s Future

<span face=""Arial",sans-serif" style="background: white; color: #272727; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 107%;">Since the Russian invasion
of Ukraine in February 2022, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has
come under increased scrutiny, not because NATO troops are involved in the
conflict, but because of its role in relations between Russia and its
neighbors. Will expanding membership in NATO protect countries, or will it
further provoke Russia?

Session Six, March 7, 6 pm: Understanding Indonesia

<span face=""Arial",sans-serif" style="background: white; color: #272727; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 107%;">Despite its large size,
Indonesia remains virtually invisible to most Americans. But as one of the
world’s largest democracies, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation, and as
an economic driver of ASEAN, why does it fly below the radar? What are current
issues in U.S.-Indonesian relations, and what role can the country play in
Asia?

Session Seven, March 14, 6 pm: The High Seas Treaty

<span face=""Arial",sans-serif" style="background: white; color: #272727; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 107%;">Areas of the seas beyond
national jurisdiction comprise the high seas, which are facing a degradation of
ecosystems due to climate change and the increase in human activities, such as
shipping, overfishing, pollution, and deep-sea mining. The recently negotiated
High Seas Treaty, also known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction
treaty, will attempt to address these issues. How difficult will it be to
convince nations to participate?

Session Eight, March 21, 6 pm: Pandemic Preparedness

<span face=""Arial",sans-serif" style="background: white; color: #272727; font-size: 9pt; line-height: 107%;">Looking back at the covid-19
pandemic, there are many lessons to take away in terms of domestic and
international policies. Although this pandemic seems to have waned, how can we
apply these lessons to future pandemics? Will countries cooperate, and will a
consensus emerge on how to manage global health challenges?

Prior to the first class in January, registered participants will receive a welcome email with Zoom access information. A limited number of copies of the books will be available for pickup at the library, or can be requested through CLAMS. All sessions will be recorded.

Additional course description, readings, and class dates appear below.

***

What might be a central tenet drawing together the six novels I have chosen for my next course at the Vineyard Haven Library? A syllabus comprised of Franzen's The Corrections, Sebald's Austerlitz, Jones's The Known World, Egan's A Visit from the Good Squad, Patchett's The Dutch House, and McCann's Apeirogon looks more like an out-of-control enterprise: these writers are so different from each other!

My candid answer is that no common theme or procedure joins together these six books. Rather, I find them the most resonant novels published (in English) in the 1st two decades of our new century. It's too early to call them classics, but (like classics) they stay in the mind long after an initial reading. The impression they make--on this reader at least--is intricate, powerful, lingering. With the exception of The Dutch House, each is difficult to categorize. Indeed, Austerlitz, The Known World, and Apeirogon escape all familiar novelistic frameworks. The Corrections and A Visit from The Goon Squad operate in more recognizable territory, but both are capable of startling you. As for The Dutch House, it is, while neither unfamiliar nor surprising, simply perfect.

We will devote two sessions each to the three longer novels (The Corrections, The Known World, Apeirogon), and a single session each to the three others. I cannot predict what you will come away with, but I can say this: together, they comprise an unforgettable set of readings. Rather than expertise--who is an expert on 21st century fiction?--I shall offer what guidance I can. A remarkable experience--in equal measures challenging and rewarding--lies ahead.

Dates and reading assignments:

Thursday Jan 18 2024: Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections (1st of 2 sessions)

Wednesday Jan 31 2024: Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections

Wednesday Feb 14 2024: W.G.
