Workshop to Address Restoring the Health of Tisbury’s Coastal Ponds

On Wednesday June 30th at 6 pm, the Tisbury Water Resources Committee will host a community workshop introducing Tisbury’s Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan (CWMP) process. This event will be held in-person at the Tisbury Emergency Services Building.

Nitrogen is a primary pollutant affecting coastal ponds and wastewater is the largest source of nitrogen in the local watersheds. Lake Tashmoo and Lagoon Pond already have high levels of nitrogen and more is being added daily from septic systems. The CWMP is a key step toward implementation of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for nitrogen in Tisbury’s estuaries, which are determined by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

The Town is working with Environmental Partners, an architectural, engineering, planning and environmental consulting firm, to produce the CWMP. The plan will look at current wastewater conditions and future wastewater needs and compare alternatives for reducing nitrogen loads in Lagoon Pond and Lake Tashmoo. The final product will be a draft 15-20 year plan that will be presented to the select board and then to the citizens of Tisbury for approval. This is the first of a number of workshops that will be held over the 3-4 year timeframe of the CWMP process. Participation by residents and stakeholders is critical for the development of a successful plan.

Anyone who would like to be on the mailing list for notices about future public workshops, for more information or with questions about Tisbury’s CWMP, send your email address to cwmp@tisburyma.gov, or go to the CWMP page on the Tisbury Town website: www.tisburyma.gov/water-resources-committee.

Virtual Event with Sally Cabot Gunning, Author of Painting the Light

Virtual : Painting the Light with author Sally Cabot Gunning
7 pm Tuesday July 6th

From the critically acclaimed author of Monticello and The Widow’s War comes a vividly rendered historical novel of love, loss, and reinvention, set on Martha’s Vineyard at the end of the nineteenth century.

Martha’s Vineyard, 1898. In her first life, Ida Russell had been a painter. Five years ago, she had confidently walked the halls of Boston’s renowned Museum School, enrolling in art courses that were once deemed “unthinkable” for women to take, and showing a budding talent for watercolors.

But no more. Ida Russell is now Ida Pease, resident of a seaside farm on Vineyard Haven, and wife to Ezra, a once-charming man who has become an inattentive and altogether unreliable husband. Ezra runs a salvage company in town with his business partner, Mose Barstow, but he much prefers their nightly card games at the local pub to his work in their Boston office, not to mention filling haystacks and tending sheep on the farm at home—duties that have fallen to Ida and their part-time farmhand, Lem. Ida, meanwhile, has left her love for painting behind.

It comes as no surprise to Ida when Ezra is hours late for a Thanksgiving dinner, only to leave abruptly for another supposedly urgent business trip to Boston. But then something truly unthinkable happens: a storm strikes, the ship carrying Ezra and Mose sinks, and they are presumed dead.

In the wake of this shocking tragedy, Ida must settle the affairs of Ezra’s estate, a task that brings her to a familiar face from her past—Henry Barstow, Mose’s brother and executor. As she joins Henry in sifting through the remnants of her husband’s life and work, Ida must learn to separate truth from lies and what matters from what doesn’t.

Painting the Light is an arresting portrait of a woman, and a considered meditation on loss and love.
