Friends "Virtual" 5k Run/Walk to Benefit the Library

This year, the Friends of Vineyard Haven Public Library's annual 5k Run/Walk to benefit the library will be a "virtual" event! Register today, and run or walk a 5k anytime during the month of September 2021. All registered participants will be entered into a raffle drawing for gift certificates to the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven!

The traditional 5K course for this race begins next to the library on Greenwood Avenue, turning left onto Main Street and proceeding up Main Street to the West Chop Lighthouse, then returning down Main Street to the library, but virtual participants can run or walk any 5k course of their choosing. Participants are asked to follow public health guidance when completing their run or walk. If possible, show your support for the library by wearing a past year's race t-shirt, and sharing a selfie to the library's Facebook page!

There is no registration or fee required to participate, but a suggested donation of $25 will help the Friends continue to support library programs and services in the coming year.

To register, visit the race website:

Virtual Event: Discovery of a Masterpiece

5 pm Wednesday September 8th on Zoom
Discovery of a Masterpiece with Mallory Mortillaro

While cataloging artwork housed inside of the Hartley Dodge Memorial, art history student Mallory Mortillaro zeroed-in on the Napoleon bust which had been sitting in a committee room for decades. Mortillaro stood on a chair, peeped around to the side of the bust that was facing the wall, and spotted an “A”—the first letter, she believed, of Rodin’s signature. After a year of research the piece was authenticated as a masterpiece by Auguste Rodin, lost to the art world since the 1930’s. Mallory will share the story of how a simple art cataloging project evolved into a search for a mysterious piece’s provenance, and became one of the biggest art finds in recent history.

Mallory Mortillaro serves as the Curator of Collections for the Hartley Dodge Foundation. She holds a BA and MAT from Drew University. She balances her work as an Art Historian with teaching 7th grade English.

Email tthorpe@clamsnet.org to sign up and get the Zoom invite. Free. Sponsored by the Chilmark, Vineyard Haven, West Tisbury, and Edgartown libraries.
