The 19th Amendment: A Virtual Tour with the National Constitution Center

A National Constitution Center museum educator will lead viewers on a LIVE guided tour of the Center's newest exhibit that traces the triumphs and struggles leading to the ratification of the 19th Amendment. The tour will help viewers to better understand the long fight for women's suffrage, and will also highlight some of the many women who transformed constitutional history - including Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul, and Ida B. Wells. Plus, viewers will get an up-close look at some of the one-of-a-kind artifacts on display, including a ballot box used to collect women's votes in the 1800s and Pennsylvania's ratification copy of the 19th Amendment.

Virtual Music Event: Women in Jazz

 

Virtual: Women in Jazz

Women have been involved in Jazz since the early 1920s, not only as vocalists, but also as instrumentalists, composers, and arrangers. An understanding of jazz would not be complete without highlighting the influence and contributions of these women. Join us to learn about the personal and professional lives of women musicians in a time when many considered jazz “a man’s world”. Galen will explore a full spectrum of years, genre, recordings, and recognized achievements. The program will include live performances by Galen Abdur-Razzaq, a renowned flautist, and samples of the artists’ music. A Q&A will follow. 
 
Galen is an extraordinary flautist with an extensive performance career. He is also a riveting speaker on the topic of jazz, and has performed and lectured at colleges and universities for over thirty years. A former educator, he holds a Master's Degree from Rutgers University in Education and Performing Arts, and he studied music at Berklee school of Music in Boston. Embracing his love of music and desire to continue educating, he offers an engaging and enjoyable path to music appreciation through music programs comprised of music performances, and lectures. He aims to provide  attendees with an understanding and appreciation of jazz and its historical significance--a true American Heritage.

Virtual Event: VOICES OF VINEYARD WOMEN with oral history curator Linsey Lee
Saturday March 6th at 4 pm

For Women’s History Month, The Chilmark and Vineyard Haven libraries present the extraordinary Linsey Lee as she shares videos presenting the voices, images and stories of some of the remarkable Vineyard women from many eras, ages, diverse ethnic backgrounds and perspectives. 

Relying on their community and on their own ingenuity, Vineyard women have traditionally thrived and taken roles of leadership on what was an often and can still seem so today, an isolated island. During the era of whaling and of coastal schooner trade when husbands and sons were off sailing the seas for years at a time; women on the Vineyard managed businesses and finances, as well as the traditional responsibilities of caring for family and children. World Wars, the Depression and conflicts overseas continued the need for women to be resilient and resourceful. Since then, Vineyard women have made their mark as doctors, nurses, racial justice activists, business leaders, homemakers, writers, soldiers, teachers, sailors, politicians, actresses. With all its challenges, living on this Island inculcates strength of character as well as a creativity of spirit. 

Linsey Lee is the oral history Curator at the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. She has been conducting oral history interviews with people of the Vineyard for over thirty years. She is the author of Vineyard Voices – Words, Faces and Voices of Island People (1998), More Vineyard Voices (2005), Those Who Serve – Martha’s Vineyard and WWII (2010), Vineyard Voices Three (2019) and Edible Wild Plants of Martha’s Vineyard (1976/1998).

Cape Cod & Islands Commission on the Status of Women to Host Public Forum

The Cape Cod and Islands Commission on the Status of Women (CCICSW) will hold a public hearing on Thursday, October 15, from 5:45 to 7:30 PM at the Vineyard Haven Public Library, 200 Main Street, Vineyard Haven.

Citizens, government officials and organizations that advocate for women and families on the island are invited to attend and encouraged to participate and inform commission members on issues that are important to women and their families, and their community across Martha’s Vineyard.  Oral and written testimony will be accepted. The hearing is open to the public.  This event will feature networking and an opportunity for those in attendance to offer comments and/or testimony on the issues that are important to them.

The information gathered at public forums is compiled by the commissioners and help frame their priorities on issues for consideration and attention.  A panel discussion and forum on housing insecurity and stability, an issue that is highly prioritized by the commission this year, will follow the public hearing and testimony.  The panel will be moderated by Deborah Medders, town moderator for Vineyard Haven and will also include Philippe Jordi, Director of Island Housing Trust.

The commission is also especially interested in hearing from the public on earned paid sick time and their other legislative priorities including: pay equity and comparable work and equitable coverage in disability policies.  The commission would also like to hear from women interested in serving in public life – being elected to public office or appointed to boards and committees.

An independent extension of the Mass. Commission on the Status of Women, the CCICSW was enacted by law and established in 2009 to advance women toward full equity in all areas of life and to promote rights and opportunities for all women.
