Adult Summer Reading Program 2022!

Read and listen to what you want all summer long!  To enter drawings for prizes, write a short review and email it to: amcdonough@clamsnet.org. The review doesn’t need to be long. Please include the book title and author.

A review will be randomly selected every other week for a prize. All entries will be automatically entered in a drawing for a grander prize at the end of the summer.

If you need ideas for fun and interesting titles contact us at vhpl_mail@gmail.com, visit our New Books page, sign up for our weekly newsletter with new book announcements, or use your library card to login to "Novelistfor suggestions.  Any media are allowed for reviews, including print books, spoken CDs, eBooks, and downloadable audiobooks.

Drawings will be held July 18th, August 8th and August 22nd, and winners will be notified by email.

Summer Reading for Children and Teens!



Visit the library beginning on Monday 6/27 to sign up for our annual Summer Reading program for children and teens!


Pre-Reader Summer Reading
Pre-Readers, best suited for ages 0-5, can participate in Summer Reading by doing a Family Bingo card! Each time one row is completed, pre-readers can come to the library to select a prize. 

School Age Summer Reading
School Age Readers, best suited for ages 6-12, can participate in Summer Reading by doing a Summer Reading Log. When signing up, readers will set their reading goal for the Summer. When the reading goal is complete, you can select a prize at the Vineyard Haven Library. 

Teen Summer Reading
Teens can earn prizes by completing squares on our summer challenge sheet! Contact Young Adult Librarian Jennifer for more info!

Tisbury Community Free Summer Tennis Clinics

The Tisbury Open Space and Recreation Committee, in conjunction with the West Chop Club’s Director of Tennis, David McNamara, is excited to offer a tennis outreach program this summer with free tennis lessons for Tisbury residents.

The Details:

What: Free clinics for Tisbury residents of all ages.
Where: The Lake Street Tennis Courts
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 28th through August 25th.

Adult clinics

Session 1 9:00 - 10:30AM.
Session 2 10:30 - 12:00PM.

Kids clinics

3-4PM for Peewees and Future Stars (ages 4-8)
4-5PM for Stars and Team (ages 9-12)
5-6PM for Academy (ages 13+)

"Young Cuba" with Jonathan Moller

 


On Thursday June 30th at 6pm, award-winning documentary photographer and human rights activist Jonathan “Jonás” Moller will present his book, 'Young Cuba' on the main floor of the Vineyard Haven Library.

Since 1991, Moller has worked mostly in Central America (primarily Guatemala), as well as in Peru and Cuba. He is the author of two books on Guatemala, a book about Peru, a book about the diversity of young Cubans today. Moller’s work is in numerous public and private collections, among others the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, Museo de Arte de Lima, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museo de Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia, Casa de Las Americas in Havana, and the George Eastman House.

He has exhibited and spoken widely in the United States, Latin America and Europe, in places as varied as the International Museum of Photography in Rochester, NY, McGill University in Montreal, the European Parliament in Brussels, the University of Granada, Spain, the Biblioteca Nacional del Peru, and the Memorial José Martí Museum in Havana. He has been a member of Impact Visuals and Swanstock and his photographs have appeared in numerous magazines and periodicals, including the LIFE 2001 Album: The Year in Pictures, Photo District News, Photo Italia, DoubleTake, and the Cultural Survival Quarterly.

Tisbury's 6th Annual Family Shellfish Day!

 

On Saturday June 18th from 9 am- Noon, the Tisbury Shellfish Department will be hosting the 6th annual Family Shellfish Day! This is a free event where kids and adults are introduced to the joys of Shellfishing and explore the nature around the Lagoon. This interactive experience is for people of all ages. 

• learn how to quahog 
• the importance of shellfish 
• ponds ecology 
• join local shellfishermen 
• learn how you can become good stewards of the pond 
• no experience needed!

This event is free, but participants should sign up by emailing Shellfish Constable Danielle Ewart at dewart@tisbryma.gov or calling 774 563 1279.

Event will take place on Beach Road, behind the Wind’s Up! in Vineyard Haven, with parking at the Lagoon boat launch parking lot. This is a family event, everyone is encouraged to participate and kids must be accompanied (no drop offs).
