Summer Reading is Here!

Visit the satellite library at 15 Church Street to participate in our Summer Reading Challenge!

Step 1: Come to the library at 15 Church St and choose a “spark” to try. For example, read a book in your favorite genre, or find all the clocks in the library.

Step 2: When you complete your spark, come to the children’s room and tell us.  

Step 3: Get a small prize and put a firefly in a jar to vote for what you would like to see in the new library! Should we get a giant teddy bear, new puppets and props, or something else, or something else?

We also have Break-in Bags for teens, and a Summer Reading Challenge Bingo Card for Adults!

NEW! Library Storytimes are now offered twice a week, Mondays & Tuesdays at 10 am!
Grace Church, 34 Woodlawn Avenue. Due to the library renovation project, our storytime programs will be held at Grace Church on the corner of Woodlawn Avenue and William Street. May be held outside in the amphitheater in nice weather.

THIS WEEK! Creating Cartoon Characters with Ira Marcks, Wednesday, June 25th at 3:30, Tisbury EMS Facility, 215 Spring Street
Award-winning graphic novelist Ira Marcks leads a hands-on workshop in designing expressive cartoon characters. Through a fun and engaging workshop, participants will learn an easy to follow process for designing a cartoon face and how to adapt the features to create emotional expressions for storytelling. Best suited for tweens and teens.

NEXT WEEK! Tisbury Family Shellfish Day, 9am - noon, Saturday, June 28th at Lagoon Pond 
Join local shell fishermen and learn how to quahog! This is a FREE community event — all ages welcome. Bring your family, friends, and curiosity for the Island’s shellfish heritage. Adult Summer Reading Program 2022!

Read and listen to what you want all summer long!  To enter drawings for prizes, write a short review and email it to: amcdonough@clamsnet.org. The review doesn’t need to be long. Please include the book title and author.

A review will be randomly selected every other week for a prize. All entries will be automatically entered in a drawing for a grander prize at the end of the summer.

If you need ideas for fun and interesting titles contact us at vhpl_mail@gmail.com, visit our New Books page, sign up for our weekly newsletter with new book announcements, or use your library card to login to "Novelist" for suggestions.  Any media are allowed for reviews, including print books, spoken CDs, eBooks, and downloadable audiobooks.

Drawings will be held July 18th, August 8th and August 22nd, and winners will be notified by email.

Summer Reading for Children and Teens!

Pre-Reader Summer Reading Pre-Readers, best suited for ages 0-5, can participate in Summer Reading by doing a Family Bingo card! Each time one row is completed, pre-readers can come to the library to select a prize.  School Age Summer Reading School Age Readers, best suited for ages 6-12, can participate in Summer Reading by doing a Summer Reading Log. When signing up, readers will set their reading goal for the Summer. Teens & Tweens: Participate in Battle of the Books!

This summer, Teens and Tweens can participate in the Martha's Vineyard Library Association's island-wide "Battle of the Books!" Participants read up to 6 books for their age group, and compete in a trivia contest over Zoom to win 1st, 2nd, & 3rd prize gift certificates from Bunch of Grapes.

Summer Reading for Kids, Teens, and Grownups!

Sign-up for Summer Reading at the Vineyard Haven Public Library began Saturday June 23rd. Children and caregivers can visit the Children's Room at the library to sign up, log reading time, and earn prizes, including a T-shirt!

Free programs for young children at Vineyard Haven Library will include a visit by storybook character Paddington, musical story times with Joyce Maxner, Jeremy & Rob, Ellen Allard, Hugh Hanley, and Songs of Peace, a performance by of Chinese folktales by Behind the Mask Studio, and visiting authors Consie Berghausen, Dr. Oneeka Williams, and Rosemary Wells.

Older kids can participate in weekly crafting, gaming, and maker programs, including a collage art workshop with Michael Albert, STEAM challenges, rocket building, lantern painting for Illumination Night, and Jedi Training Camp with Jedi Jim. The Teen Summer Reading Challenge is open to students 6th-12th grade. Once a day participants can get a scratch-off ticket when they check out books. All tickets are instant winner for prizes like candy, iTunes gift cards, gift certificates from local businesses, a selection from the prize basket, and Grand Prizes. Teens can also visit the library to claim a $5 coupon that you may use to pay off fines on overdue items. The coupon may be redeemed at the Vineyard Haven Library at any time, but cannot be used to replace lost items.

Each summer, Vineyard Haven Library has a program for adults 18 and up that is fun and easy to participate in. This summer, participants will complete 10 challenges on a literary-related BINGO card, and bring the completed BINGO card to the library to receive a scratch-off ticket. All scratch-off tickets will win a prize, such as a re-useable library bag or a gift certificate. Leave the scratch-off ticket with your name and phone on the back to be including in a Grand Prize drawing in August.

On Saturday, July 1st, Jungle Jim will perform at the Agricultural Hall at 35 Panhandle Road in West Tisbury. Jungle Jim's 45-minute action-packed performance will include balloon artistry, magic, comedy and improv. Doors open at 10:30am; performance at 11am.

Free programs for young children at Vineyard Haven Library will include a visit by storybook character Olivia, musical story times with Ellen Allard, Jeremy Berlin, Hugh Hanley, and Joyce Maxner, yoga storytime with Anne Caldwell, Drumming workshop with Rick Bausman, and a performance by Nappy's Puppets. Older kids can participate in weekly crafting and maker programs, robotics, cartooning classes with Andy Fish, lantern painting for Illumination Night, and gaming including an "Escape Room" adventure. The Martha's Vineyard Library Association is hosting a special event to kick off the Summer Reading Program. On Saturday, July 5th, comic juggler Bill Ross will perform at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury at 11am. This family event will also feature face painting, popcorn, and all around fun. Admission is $4; doors open at 10:30am.

Free programs for children at VH Library this summer include a concert by Ellen Allard for ages 4 and up on July 8th at 11am, musical story times with Joyce Maxner on Tuesday July 15th at 10am and 11am, and concerts by Jeremy Berlin on July 22nd at 10am and 11am. Marvelous Marvin will bring circus arts, magic and music to the library on August 7 at 4pm. On Wednesday August 6th, visit the "Whalemobile", a life-sized inflatable humpback whale. Children can go inside the whale, hear the sounds of different species of whales, touch real whale parts, and learn how to help protect these animals (at the Tisbury School). These events are made possible by a contribution from The Anderson Foundation.

Additional special guests planned for children's programs include Kathy Forrester, Emily Solarazza, Phyllis Vecchia, storybook character Ladybug Girl, and Susie Bowman from Felix Neck. Details will be available at the library and on our website, www.vhlibrary.org.

The Martha's Vineyard Library Association will be hosting events for children of all ages to kickoff the Summer Reading Program. On Saturday, June 29th at the Vineyard Haven Public Library, Andy & Veronica Fish will lead a free Kid's Comic Workshop for ages 8–12 from 1:00 – 1:30 pm, and a free Japanese Manga Workshop for ages 13 & up from 3:00 – 3:45 pm. On Saturday, July 6th, Vanessa Trien will perform at the Ag Hall in West Tisbury at 11am. This family event will feature singing, dancing, face painting, and all around fun. Admission is $3; face painting is $1.

Other free programs for children that are planned for the summer include musical story times with Ellen Hoffman on Tuesday July 16th at 10am and 11am, a concert by Ellen Allard for ages 4 and up on August 13th at 11am, and a workshop and performance by the Cape Cod African Dance & Drum on Thursday, August 8th at 3:30pm. These events are made possible by a contribution from The Anderson Foundation. Additional special guests planned for children's programs include author Molly Lesnikowski, Kathy Forrester, Joyce Maxner, Phyllis Vecchia, storybook character Amelia Bedelia, Felix Neck, and Gus Ben David and his wild animals. Summer Reading For Grownups Grand Prize Results

Congratulations to Sarah Carr and Kay Mayhew, who were the winners of the grand prize drawing for the Library's second annual "Summer Reading for Grownups" program.

The prizes, which included a Bunch of Grapes gift certificate and a canvas library tote bag, were sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

All participants who have not already done so are invited to visit the library to select a free book before the end of September.

The theme for this year's program is "One World, Many Stories." A schedule of special programs for children and teens is now available at the library or on the online event calendar. All programs at the library are free.

A few of our special summer programs include:

Wednesday, July 13th, 3- 4:45PM: Movie for ages 8-11, based on the second book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Rated PG.

Thursday, July 21st, 11AM, Special Musical Performance with the Allards. For ages 4 and up. This event is made possible by a generous contribution from The Anderson Foundation and the Friends of the Library.

Tuesday, July 26th, 10:00AM (ages 0-2) & 11:00AM (ages 3-5): Music & Songs w/Jeremy Berlin.

Tuesday, August 2nd, 10:00AM (ages 0-2) & 11:00AM (ages 3-5): A visit from storybook character Madeline!

Thursday, August 11th, 3:30PM, African Drum and Dance, for all ages. This event is made possible by a generous contribution from The Anderson Foundation and the Friends of the Library.

Summer reading at the Vineyard Haven Public Library is supported by the Friends of the Library and donations from community businesses including MV Bagel Authority, Bob's Pizza, Bunch of Grapes, Capawock Theatre, Dinghy Dogs, EduComp, Island Music, Mocha Motts, Murdick's Fudge, and Riley Reads.

Summer Reading for Grownups

Register now to participate in the Vineyard Haven Public Library's 1st ever Summer Reading Program for Grownups! Read a book a week (8 books July through August) to be eligible to win a free paperback or other prizes. Open to all CLAMS library card holders, age 18 and above.

Create an online account by visiting our summer reading website. Login to your account to log the books you read over the summer, write reviews, and register for prizes. Registration begins June 27th, and all books read should be logged by Saturday, August 27th.

Reading incentives for those who complete the program include a choice from 75 paperback bestsellers donated to the Vineyard Haven Public Library by Geraldine Brooks and Penguin Publishing, in celebration of the publisher's 75th anniversary. Incentives will be awarded the week of August 29th.
