Martha's Vineyard Photography Club Group Show

This June, members of the Martha's Vineyard Photography Club will showcase their work in the 8th annual group art show at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. The show is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, who will host an opening reception on Tuesday June 5th from 6 pm - 7 pm. This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The photographs will be on display during regular library hours from June 4th through June 15th. Featured photographers include Michael Cohen, Phyllis Dunn, Dianne Holt, Bruce Kinch, Lynn Khosla, Betsi Luce, Jeannie Pierson, Maria Thibodeau, and Susan Waldrop.

The Martha's Vineyard Photography Club meets monthly at the Vineyard Haven Public Library on the first Thursday of each month at 6pm. The club is open and welcoming to photographers of all kinds and all levels. Club activities include photo sharing, presentations on various aspects of photography (drawing on the expertise of club members and outside sources), and field trips, as well as other areas of group interest.

In addition to the annual group show in June, Vineyard Haven Public Library's "Art in the Stacks" space features rotating monthly exhibits managed by the Friends of the Library. The library also has a collection of artworks that are displayed throughout the year, including 12 paintings by Vineyard artist Captain John Ivory.Artists interested in showing their work may contact the library at (508) 696-4210.

Sunday with Friends: Rose Styron

On Sunday, July 12th at 2pm, the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library are pleased to present an afternoon honoring poet Rose Styron, who will read from her work. Ms. Styron will be introduced by special guest Jorie Graham. This event is free, and refreshments will be served. The library will open at 1:30 pm for this event.

Rose Styron, poet and international human rights activist, has published three books of poetry: From
Summer to Summer (1965), Thieves’ Afternoon (1973), and By Vineyard Light (1995). She has collaborated on translations of two books of Russian poetry, and contributed a chapter to the book Unholy Ghost: Writers on Depression. In 2012, she edited a volume of the selected letters of her husband William Styron. Her work has appeared in Harper’s, the Yale Review, the Hopkins Review, and American Poetry Review among many other distinguished periodicals. In 2009 and 2010 Ms. Styron was a resident fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics and its Carr Center for Human Rights. She has chaired PEN’s Freedom To Write Committee and the RFK Human Rights Award, and serves on the board of the American Academy of Poets.

The Friends of the Library support a variety of programs for both adults and children throughout the year, including an annual summer event honoring a local author. Past honorees have included Geraldine Brooks, Art Buchwald, Stephen Carter, Phil Craig, Jules Feiffer, Lillian Hellman, John Hough, Jr., Ward Just, David McCullough, Cynthia Riggs, and William Styron.  For more information contact the Vineyard Haven Public Library, (508) 696-4211.

4th Annual Group Art Show in June at the Library

This June, more than 20 local artists will exhibit their work in the annual group art show at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. The artwork will be on display during regular library hours from June 2nd through June 14th.  The show has been curated by Francine Kelly, and sponsored by the Friends of the Library, who will host an opening reception on Tuesday, June 3rd from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

This year's featured artists include Renee Balter, Laura Beebe, Christine Coon, John Crelan, Deirdre DeCarion, Joe Doebler, Phyllis Dunn, Lowely Finnerty, Lisa Glus, Maryanne Goldberg, Carolyn Henderson, Susan Johnson, Nancy Kingsley, Iris Kirkwood, Clara Kisko, Jennifer Langhammer, Jeri Larson, Peter Mallen, Janet Messineo, Robert Schaefer, Emily Walkenstein and Ovid Ward.

The library has a collection of artworks that are displayed throughout the year, including 12 paintings by Vineyard artist Captain John Ivory. In addition, the "Art in the Stacks" space features rotating monthly exhibits managed by the Friends of the Library.

The Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library encourage public understanding of the Library's vital role in the community, support activities for both adults and children, and provide various other volunteer services. The mission of the Friends is to support the Library, to build a partnership between the Library and the community, and to advocate for quality library service.

Special Events in August

Tuesday August 7th, 7 pm
James Prosek: Eels -- An Exploration, From New Zealand to the Sargasso, of the World’s Most Amazing and Mysterious Fish
James Prosek offers a fascinating tour through the life, history, and cultural associations of the freshwater eel, exploring its biology in streams and epic migrations in the ocean, its myth and lore, its mystery and beauty. Prosek travels the globe and will be spending much of the month of August in Japan filming a documentary about his study of eels for Nature on PBS.

Tuesday, August 21st, 7 pm
From Cowboys to Kids: A Personal Journey with Len Morris
Winner of the 2012 Iqbal Masih Award for the Elimination of Child Labor, documentary filmmaker Len Morris will share his story of how he went from producing documentary films on westerns and their cowboy heroes, to filming and producing documentaries on child labor in many third world countries. Len’s website, mediavoicesforchildren.org, documents his fight against violations of human rights and the human spirit.

Lee McCormack & Rachel Baird: Celebrating Martha’s Vineyard’s New Poet Laureate
Join us as we welcome Lee McCormack to his new role as Martha’s Vineyard’s Poet Laureate. Lee will read his poetry, accompanied by Rachel Baird, Martha’s Vineyard’s Seasonal Poet Laureate. Sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Poetry Society, with a reception to follow.

Tuesday, August 28th, 7 pm
Duncan Caldwell: Ancient Egyptian Royal Symbols
Archaeologist Duncan Caldwell will speak about one of his most recent expeditions to the Egyptian Sahara. Many of the symbols which were used by the royalty of ancient Egypt around 5,000 years ago came from 3,000 miles away. As the area became a desert, the Sahara, the population retraced their ancestors’ steps. Duncan has been on the vanguard of important archaeological conservation efforts in Europe and Africa. He lives in Paris and Aquinnah.

Richard Ferland: Travel To China -- From Preparation to Immersion
Join professional photographer Richard Ferland as he takes you on a journey through China. Richard has extensive experience in China, having lived and worked there for a number of years. This presentation focuses on China’s greatest asset, its people.

Friends of the Library Present 1st Annual June Art Show

This June the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library will host an exhibition featuring the work of more than 20 Vineyard artists. The exhibit will be on display during regular library hours from June 7th – June 19th.

Although the library has a collection of artworks that are displayed throughout the year, this is the first special exhibition sponsored by the Friends of the Library. It is planned to be an annual event. A reception will be held on Tuesday, June 8th, from 5-8pm. This event is free and open to the public.
