Small Pieces from the Big Composers with Silas Berlin

The Vineyard Haven Public Library is pleased to welcome pianist Silas Berlin for an evening of classical piano music. This event will be held at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, August 18th, at the Vineyard Haven Public Library, located at 200 Main Street in Vineyard Haven. Free and open to the public, no registration required.

Silas will perform a wide array of eras and styles in short form composition, including preludes, etudes, and salon music by Chopin, Gershwin, Rachmaninoff and others. 

Raised on Martha's Vineyard, Silas currently lives in Seattle, where he teaches private piano lessons and performs when the occasion arises. Silas deeply values the opportunity to share music with the island community that itself places a deep value on music.

The Tristan Israel Band in Concert!

The Vineyard Haven Public Library is pleased to welcome The Tristan Israel Band for an evening of true “Americana” music, with roots in folk, rock, blues, and even some jazz. This program will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, July 21st at the Vineyard Haven Public Library, located at 200 Main Street in Vineyard Haven. Free and open to the public. No registration required.

An island classic, The Tristan Israel Band plays mainly original tunes written by Tristan Israel, along with a few covers. The band is composed of Tristan Israel, Paul Thurlow and Nancy Jephcote. Tristan sings vocals and plays acoustic guitar and harmonica, while Paul plays bass, piano, keys, electric guitar, percussion and backing vocals, and Nancy Jephcote plays the fiddle.

The Jeremy Berlin - Eric Johnson Duo

The Vineyard Haven Public Library is pleased to present an evening of music and community with local piano-guitar duo Jeremy Berlin and Eric Johnson. The Jeremy Berlin - Eric Johnson Duo will play a mix of original songs, music from the Great American Songbook, and jazz treatments of some more modern fare. In the 25 years that Berlin and Johnson have been playing jazz together, the two have figured out the advantages and challenges of a piano/guitar duo, learning how to both accompany and complement one another, to create a full sound with dynamic interplay.

Our Queer Elders in History and Song

In celebration of Pride Month, the Vineyard Haven Library is pleased to welcome singer, songwriter and storyteller Katie Castagno for an evening of music and storytelling. “Our Queer Elders” will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, June 10th at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, located at 51 Spring Street in Vineyard Haven (above Tisbury Town Hall). Free and open to the public. No registration required.

Katie Castagno uses storytelling and original song to celebrate and elevate the lives of people who have queered social and gender norms throughout history. At a time when queer history and voices are increasingly erased, “Our Queer Elders” is both informative and cheeky, whether it’s an account of Rachel Carson’s whirlwind romance with Dorothy Freeman, a sweet love song about Mary Oliver, or an imagining of the night Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt took a joyride after dinner in 1933.

Katie Castagno is a geologist by day and a singer-songwriter by night. Drawing on roots in rural New England and collegiate a cappella, Katie writes about people, places, and geological phenomena. Katie has released several singles, including “High Tide,” an exploration of life as a menstruating field scientist. Katie’s first full-length album, Every House I’ve Known, is a collection of songs reflecting on what it means to call somewhere home, with each based on a different place of residence. When not making music, Katie is the director of the Land-Sea Interaction Program at the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown, MA, and spends most of the time in the salt marsh.

Free Concert with Touring Folk Artists Hungrytown

 

At 6:00 PM on Tuesday, April 22nd, the Vineyard Haven Library presents a concert by the indie folk artist duo, Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson, of Hungrytown. The concert will be held in the Katharine Cornell Theatre at 51 Spring Street in Vineyard Haven (above Tisbury Town Hall). This event is free and open to the public, made possible by a gift from the estate of Ruth Redding. No registration required.

Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson, through their years of worldwide touring and tireless devotion to many classic genres of music, have crafted Hungrytown into a true artistic hybrid. Lyricist Rebecca Hall is credited with compositions “that sound as timeless as any traditional songs” (Northern Sky, UK) while producer/multi-instrumentalist/husband Ken Anderson is lauded for his “remarkable affinity for instrumental embellishment” (No Depression) and for crafting Hungrytown’s “gorgeous vocal harmonies” (Folk and Roots, UK). 

Hall and Anderson met in New York City, where they had already been performing regularly--Hall as a jazz singer, and Anderson as a drummer for a variety of psychedelic pop bands. Their introduction to folk music came later, when a close friend--who died young due to a tragic misdiagnosis--entrusted to them her collection of 1960s folk albums and her guitar (which can be heard on all of their albums). 

Inspired by the grit and true-to-life experiences she heard in these traditional ballads, Hall wrote the lyrics that later became her first songs, aided by Anderson’s flair for musical arrangement. 

Soon afterwards, Hall released two solo albums, Rebecca Hall Sings! (1999) and Sunday Afternoon (2002), both produced by Anderson.  In the winter of 2003, the duo moved to the green hills of Vermont and decided to pursue a full-time career as touring musicians. They released their first CD, Hungrytown, in 2007; Any Forgotten Thing in 2011; and Further West in 2015. The couple continue to spend about half of each year on the road, especially roads in North America, Europe and New Zealand. 

Hungrytown's music has received extensive radio airplay worldwide and has appeared on several television shows, including The Daily Show and Portlandia.

Family Friendly Concert with Rolie Polie Guacamole

Martha's Vineyard libraries present a family-friendly concert with Brooklyn's "kindie" rock band Rolie Polie Guacamole, at 3:00 pm Tuesday, August 22nd at the bandstand in Owen Park. Rolie Polie Guacamole's high energy, interactive shows are a mix of funk, rock, and folk music mashed into original tunes about natural living, eating healthy, and staying active. This free event is made possible by the Martha’s Vineyard Library Association and supported by the MV Cultural Council.  

Rolie Polie Guacamole lays claim to being the one of the hardest working bands in kids’ music, and that just might be true. They’ve released six albums and played well over 2,000 shows nationwide since hitting the boards with their first performance in 2007, receiving top picks from Boston.com, Time Out NY Kids, and Time Out Chicago.

Winner of the prestigious Parents’ Choice® and NAPPA Awards, Rolie Polie Guacamole has developed a smart, parent-friendly musical style that dresses up original tunes and classic covers with vibrant harmonies and deft instrumental layers, plugging in a sizzling electric current of rhythm that lights up lyrics humming with relevance and humor.

Vineyard Haven Library welcomes you back to the Katharine Cornell Theater for a free concert! Naomi Westwater (they/she) is an award-winning singer-songwriter from Massachusetts who you may have heard on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert. Their work combines folk music, poetry, and spirituality. Under the Radar Magazine describes one of Westwater's songs this way: “Feeling My Feelings’ sees Westwater once again pulling from their eclectic array of influences, from jazzy songstress legends like Ella Fitzgerald to indie folk mainstays like Wilco. The percussion skirts around the edges of the song while acrobatic guitar lines wind and enlace with Westwater’s smoky vocals.” You can see some of Westwater's videos by clicking here. 

Naomi  holds a Master of Music in Contemporary Performance and Production from Berklee College of Music and she is a part of The Club Passim Folk Collective. She was nominated for a 2021 and 2022 Boston Music Award for best singer-songwriter, and has been featured in Under The Radar, WBUR, Vanyaland, WGBH, Allston Pudding, and The Bluegrass Situation.

This event will be held at the historic Katharine Cornell Theater at 51 Spring Street, above the Tisbury Town Hall.

Songwriting Series Starts in February

Songwriting with Peter Halperin

Yip Harburg who wrote the lyrics for “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” said “Words make you think, music makes you feel, songs make you feel your thoughts”. To which I add “and think your feelings.” This workshop explores ways in which we can facilitate this interaction between our thoughts and feelings to create songs. This exciting songwriting opportunity wil be led by Peter Halperin, who brought down the house at the Chilmark Jam last November. This program will run both in person (at the Vineyard Haven Library) and via Zoom, but will not be recorded.

This workshop consists of 4 classes. Please try to attend them all!

SESSION 1: 2 pm Wednesday February 8th
Songs harness the power of preconscious feelings and thoughts in the form of music and words. We will explore techniques to tap into this reservoir and “invite” songs to come. Members will capture at least a fragment of a song with music and lyric everyday.

SESSION 2: 2 pm Wednesday March 8th
What makes a “good song lyric” and “good song music” can only be understood in terms of how they interact with each other. Most great songs are made neither from great poems or great pieces of music. It is how they come together that makes a successful song. Members will write a complete song in week 2.

SESSION 3: 2 pm Wednesday April 12th
Asking for inspiration from others and ourselves. It’s not just ok to borrow musical and lyrical ideas, it’s inevitable! We will select words from a favorite poem or prose that members will write music for, and do the same selecting either a melody or chord progression from a favorite song or piece of music that they will write lyrics for. Members will ask themselves “what is the most important thing for me to communicate in a song this week?” Having selected it members will write that song during the week.

SESSION 4: 2 pm Wednesday May 10th
Songs must be sung!! Members will select one of the songs they have written during the 4 months and share it with or without instrumental accompaniment. When possible, we will all sing harmony with the songwriter.

[In-person, outdoors] First Friday is a free community event in Vineyard Haven on the first Friday of every month from June through October. Join the community for an evening of art, music, shopping, food, and inspiration as Vineyard Haven opens its doors to celebrate. Women have been involved in Jazz since the early 1920s, not only as vocalists, but also as instrumentalists, composers, and arrangers. An understanding of jazz would not be complete without highlighting the influence and contributions of these women. Join us to learn about the personal and professional lives of women musicians in a time when many considered jazz “a man’s world”. Galen will explore a full spectrum of years, genre, recordings, and recognized achievements. The program will include live performances by Galen Abdur-Razzaq, a renowned flautist, and samples of the artists’ music. A Q&A will follow. 
 
Galen is an extraordinary flautist with an extensive performance career. He is also a riveting speaker on the topic of jazz, and has performed and lectured at colleges and universities for over thirty years. A former educator, he holds a Master's Degree from Rutgers University in Education and Performing Arts, and he studied music at Berklee school of Music in Boston. Embracing his love of music and desire to continue educating, he offers an engaging and enjoyable path to music appreciation through music programs comprised of music performances, and lectures. He aims to provide  attendees with an understanding and appreciation of jazz and its historical significance--a true American Heritage.

Online: Hits of the Ragtime Era with The Ragged Blade Band

 

TUESDAY, APRIL 20, AT 6 PM on Zoom!

Pop music comes and goes, but some songs from over 100 years ago are just as fresh in the mind as the day they were written. The Entertainer, Alexander’s Ragtime Band, St. Louis Blues, and Ballin’ the Jack are still familiar, but even when they first hit the scene, these songs were recognized as having something special. We’ll take a look at some of the songs that captivated the public and how their popularity continued into the present, and we’ll also share some songs and rags that were hits back in their day. So to quote Irving Berlin, “come on along” for a great hour of ragtime and also some early jazz and blues!

“Cherry & Jerry” is Isaac Cherry on percussion and Jerry Rabushka on piano. Based in St. Louis, the duo is also part of the larger “Ragged Blade Band,” and has toured music of the ragtime era throughout a several state area. They’ve found this music is great for good times – brewpubs, wineries, markets, festivals, and more! They’ve appeared in the Big River Steampunk Festival in Hannibal, MO, the Oddities and Curiosities Expo in Chicago and Tulsa, the RAGBRAI bicycle event in Iowa, and the St. Louis World’s Fare in their hometown. A typical performance includes some well known songs of the early 20th century as well breathing life back into as some rarely played tunes.

The Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library are pleased to present “Martha's Vineyard Jazz in Black & White" an exhibit of photographs by Michael Johnson. The exhibit will be on display on the lower level of the library during regular library hours throughout the month of August, 2019.

“Martha's Vineyard Jazz in Black & White” is an on going photographic project created by Martha's Vineyard  artist Michael Johnson. Since beginning this project in 2011, Mr. Johnson has created images of many luminaries of the jazz world when they performed on Martha's Vineyard. According to the artist, "Martha's Vineyard  is a locale with a rich history of local and visiting musical talent. I am drawing on that ready fount of talent while attempting to channel the artistry and feel of the old school black and white jazz imagery of the 1940s through the 60s."

Michael Johnson was born in Harlem, New York City and heard his calling to the fine arts at an early age. As a youth he spent many hours in the public libraries and museums studying the works of the great masters of art motivated by his love of their work.  Among his favorites were the painters of the Renaissance, while he also spent abundant amounts of time studying the Flemish masters and Art Nouveau. But his odyssey as a visual artist didn’t begin until his late twenties when he decided on a whim to enroll in a community college video production class. It was while attending this class that his earlier studies came to the fore, and he realized that he had some “natural” talent for composition and camera work. He prevailed on his father to lend him three hundred and fifty dollars to buy his first camera. Shortly afterward he moved to Martha’s Vineyard Island where he taught himself the art of photography. He has  traveled and photographed many American states, the Caribbean, Europe, Cuba and, Thailand.

Michael has has been a full time artist since 2001. He now lives 5 months of the year on Martha’s Vineyard and runs his own gallery in Vineyard Haven. He endeavors to keep the traditional techniques of hand crafted black and white photography alive with his work. Michael says of his creative process: “All of my work is informed by my deep belief in God. I try to tell the truth with my images, but it must be told from the view point of dignity and beauty. Whether it is nature, architecture, or people, God creates the forms and the moments and I draw on my talent and spirit to capture them. My job is infinitely simple, but infinitely rewarding.”

Children's Programs Schedule Update

Vineyard Haven Library's weekly children's programs are on hiatus for the first two weeks of June. On June 18th the library will resume weekly Preschool Storytimes, every Monday and Tuesday at 10:30 am throughout the summer. (There will be no Wednesday storytimes during the summer.)

Afternoon programs including Wednesday Build Club, Thursday Crafts, and Friday Game Time, will also resume the week of June 18th, at 3:30pm.

Special musical events for preschool age children will be offered on the following dates at 10:00 am and 11:00 am, instead of our regular 10:30 am programs:

Summer Reading for Kids, Teens, and Grownups at Vineyard Haven Library!

Registration for the Summer Reading Program at the Vineyard Haven Public Library begins Monday, June 26th. Children may visit the library to sign up, log the books they read, and earn prizes including a T-shirt and gift certificates from local businesses. Teens ages 12 to 18 can register online, then visit the library to claim a prize just for signing up.

The Martha's Vineyard Library Association is hosting a FREE event to kick off the Summer Reading Program. On Saturday, July 1st, Jungle Jim will perform at the Agricultural Hall at 35 Panhandle Road in West Tisbury. Jungle Jim's 45-minute action-packed performance will include balloon artistry, magic, comedy and improv. Doors open at 10:30am; performance at 11am.

Free programs for young children at Vineyard Haven Library will include a visit by storybook character Olivia, musical story times with Ellen Allard, Jeremy Berlin, Hugh Hanley, and Joyce Maxner, yoga storytime with Anne Caldwell, Drumming workshop with Rick Bausman, and a performance by Nappy's Puppets. Older kids can participate in weekly crafting and maker programs, robotics, cartooning classes with Andy Fish, lantern painting for Illumination Night, and gaming including an "Escape Room" adventure. Vineyard Haven Library also has a Summer Reading Program for “Grownups”. Adults who keep track of their reading are eligible to win gift certificates and other prizes sponsored by the Friends of the Library. To participate, pick up a Summer Reading bookmark at the Library, read at least one book in a category of your choosing, and hand in your bookmark including your name and contact information. Prize drawings will be held at the end of July & August.

The summer reading program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Programs for children at Vineyard Haven Public Library are supported by the Friends of the Library and are free for participants.
