Beach Befrienders Tisbury Beach Cleanup has been cancelled due to forecast storm, to be rescheduled
Tisbury beaches need our help! These winter winds have brought in a lot of debris so join us for our last 2025 cleanup to start the new year fresh and clean. Join Beach Befrienders at the Tashmoo Cut, Owen Park Beach, or Beach Road Landing from 11 am to 1 pm on Sunday December 28th Thursday January 1st, or help tally the trash at 1pm at the Tisbury EMS on Spring Street. Participants can get a free coffee/hot chocolate OR doughnut/muffin at The Black Dog - BYO mug!

Adopt A Drain in Tisbury

Adopt A Drain in Tisbury! Tisbury Waterways, Inc. (TWI) has launched a new Adopt-a-Drain program, funded by a grant from the Edey Foundation. There are 639 stormwater drains in Tisbury. If those drains are clogged with leaves and debris, rainwater and polluted water pours down our roads and into our waterways. While the DPW focuses on the drains on the busiest streets, TWI volunteers (like you!) who join the program, can maintain stormwater drains on neighborhood streets. Your participation keeps waterways safe for plants and animals and clean for swimming and our enjoyment. Public Meeting December 6th for Department of Transportation Beach Road Study
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is conducting a study of Beach Road, Lagoon Pond Road, and the Five Corners intersection in Tisbury. This study will develop conceptual alternatives intended to improve climate resiliency, safety, and the public realm. This planning study precedes the project development process and will include opportunities for public input on existing conditions and proposed alternatives. A Working Group of local stakeholders will inform the MassDOT team on local perspectives throughout the study.
A public information meeting will be held on Zoom on Wednesday, December 6th at 6:30 p.m.

This meeting will present the study team's review of existing conditions in the area of Beach Road and Five Corners, including flood vulnerability, road safety and operations, and existing infrastructure. There will be the opportunity for public comment. The study team will also provide an overview of next steps.

The Tisbury Master Plan : Presentation of Themes
Please join the Master Plan Steering Committee and Barrett Planning Group (BPG) at 5pm on Tuesday, October 11th for a virtual presentation of key issues facing the town of Tisbury and an understanding of baseline conditions across town. It is critical this assessment is vetted by town stakeholders - residents, town staff, workers, and business owners - to ensure specific elements have not been overlooked, while others are flagged for further exploration. These issues will inform the next phase of Master Plan work for BPG as they craft strategic recommendations that chart The Town’s future for the next 10-15 years. An extended public comment session will follow the presentation.

Community Input Sessions for Tisbury Master Plan

If you live, work, play or otherwise have a stake in Tisbury, you are invited to participate in two community input sessions on Wednesday August 10th to share your thoughts with members of the Master Plan Steering Committee. We will be soliciting input on the town’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges, and talking through them with both the team and other community members - seasonal and year round residents, alike.
These sessions will be key to giving seasonal residents the opportunity to meet with members of the Master Plan Steering Committee, along with the consultant team (Barrett Planning Group) in person. There will be ongoing engagement opportunities beyond the 10th, both in person and virtual format. These sessions will be catered toward Tisbury residents, but not exclusive to them.
Planning Boards are authorized to develop a Comprehensive Municipal Master Plan by Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 41, 81D which requires sections on Natural & Cultural Resources, Economic Development, Housing, Land Use, Open Space & Recreation, Facilities & Services, Circulation & Transportation, plus an implementation section, describing how and when goals are to be achieved. Tisbury's plan will also address climate change, governance structure, housing production, and area plans for the B-I and B-II Business Districts and the Waterfront Commercial District.

Free History Class from the Martha's Vineyard Museum!
Introduction to Martha’s Vineyard History
Tuesdays from 3 PM - 4:30 PM July 19th - Aug 23rd
In-person at the Museum
A fast-paced overview that covers 400 years of Island history, this course takes participants from Bartholomew Gosnold to the present in just six weeks. It explores seldom-told Island stories — why is there a ship buried under Five Corners? why is the deadliest hurricane in Vineyard history nearly forgotten? and what, exactly, happened to Captain Orrock’s clothes? — and examines familiar ones like Grey’s Raid, the whaling era, and Nancy Luce from new angles. MVM research librarian Bow Van Riper uses his storytelling skills and thirty-five years’ experience as a historian, as well as seldom-seen documents and objects from the Museum’s collections, to bring Vineyard history to life.

Tisbury Community Free Summer Tennis Clinics
The Tisbury Open Space and Recreation Committee, in conjunction with the West Chop Club’s Director of Tennis, David McNamara, is excited to offer a tennis outreach program this summer with free tennis lessons for Tisbury residents.

What: Free clinics for Tisbury residents of all ages.
Where: The Lake Street Tennis Courts
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 28th through August 25th.

Event will take place on Beach Road, behind the Wind’s Up! in Vineyard Haven, with parking at the Lagoon boat launch parking lot. This is a family event, everyone is encouraged to participate and kids must be accompanied (no drop offs).

Memorial Day: Schedule & Special Events
The Vineyard Haven Public Library will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 30th.
On Friday May 27th, students from the Tisbury School will participate in their annual Memorial Day March to the Sea. Students will carry flowers from the School to the harbor, commemorating those who gave their lives for their country. The ceremony will begin at the School at 12:15 pm, marching via Spring Street and Main Street, and ending at Owen Park at approximately 1:00 pm.
On Monday May 30th, the town of Tisbury will hold a Memorial Day Picnic from noon to 4 pm on the grounds of the restored Tashmoo Spring Building on West Spring Street off State Road. Entertainment will include live music, boating, games, and more. Grills and free ice cream will be provided by the Town of Tisbury. Bring your own picnic food and supplies, and please leave your dogs at home. VTA Bus stops at Tashmoo Overlook from 12-4pm.

MV Climate Action Week May 8th-14th
Climate change impacts are affecting our health and well-being, the natural world, the built environment, and the Island economy. What can you do to make a difference? Take part in MV Climate Action Week! Climate Action Week is a community engagement project organized under the MV Climate Action Plan, developed by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission to create a resilient community in the face of climate change. Join us May 8-14th for a week of climate related events, to acquire the awareness and resources to make informed decisions and take positive action.
A Finale Event will be held at the Grange on May 14th from 10am-2pm, featuring an assortment of climate action information, giveaways, art & children’s activities, aquaculture & raw bar, an electric vehicle fleet, food, and a short presentation on the MV Climate Action Plan. Programming will include music with Tristan Israel & Company, featuring a performance by Molly Conole and Mark Lovewell with songs created just for the occasion at 11am, and an MVFF Film Screening of the documentary YOUTH v GOV at 12pm.

Arnie's Poetry Cafe presents the Cleaveland House Poets: Poems for the Earth

A night of poetry for the earth, by the Cleaveland House Poets. Cleaveland House Poets are based in the 1740 Cleaveland House in West Tisbury on the Island of Martha's Vineyard. Founded in 1963 by Dionis Coffin Riggs in her family home. It is considered the oldest continuous poetry group in the northeast and possibly further.

Free COVID-19 Home Test Kits For Tisbury Residents
Free COVID-19 Home Test Kits will be available at Vineyard Haven Library on Monday, January 24th, during regular library hours, 10 am to 5pm. One test per family member will be distributed while supplies last.
Symptomatic individuals should not enter the library. To arrange contactless pickup, when you have arrived at the library, call (508) 696-4211 from your car, and request delivery to your vehicle.
Tests will also be available on Monday at Tisbury Town Hall, the Town Hall Annex, and the Tisbury Fire Station.
Through a federal government program, households can request four free test kits to be mailed to them by signing up at www.covidtests.gov

Tisbury Planning Board Seeks Applicants for Master Plan Steering Committee
The Tisbury Planning Board has launched their Master Plan process with immediate plans to select members to a Master Plan Steering Committee, expected to begin work in early 2022. Steering Committee members will work closely with the Town’s planning consultants and the Planning Board to guide the development of the Master Plan. The committee will assist the consultant team in the development and implementation of community outreach activities, attend public meetings, and serve as a liaison between the community and the planning consultants. They will review and provide input on interim documents and participate in the final review of the draft plan.
The Planning Board seeks to convene a committee of volunteers with varying backgrounds and skill sets and members that reflect the different voices of Tisbury. They are looking for individuals who are enthusiastic about the development of the master plan, collaborative, thoughtful, and community-minded. When completed, the Tisbury Master Plan will provide broad direction in support of the Town’s long-term goals. According to Dawn Bellante Holand, Planning Board Chairperson. “Tisbury has never had a Master Plan, so we are now involved in a historic planning process which will chart the course of our town and development for years to come. A Master Plan brings clarity – and direction-to the decision-making process.” Bellante-Holand noted that an important goal of the process is to generate broad consensus. “The Master Plan will become a roadmap for the Town, and will help to ensure that individual town projects and procedures align with the Town’s long-term goals.”
While the Planning Board will hire a consultant to guide the two-year process, public input and feedback will be valued, and welcomed at every step of the way. “We want to hear from residents, businesses, boards, and committees, to find out what’s important to them,” said Cheryl Doble, Planning Board Member. “We want to consider and include these ideas and opinions, so we can build town-wide consensus, and support for the final plan.”
All Tisbury residents have an opportunity to participate in public forums throughout the process.
