This workshop will encompass preparing, protecting, and passing on one of your most important possessions: your digital legacy. Topics will include protecting your digital (online) assets, organizing, protecting, and sharing your irreplaceable photos, and creating and preserving our wishes, values, history, and beliefs (memory books and legacy letters.) 

The class will be led by Senior2Senior instructor Paul Gentile, whose career at Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation focused in the areas of strategic planning and IT. While in upstate New York, he worked at Cornell University and helped establish their first digital archiving conservation project before moving to an administrative position in the School of Engineering. A Cape Cod resident since 1999, he has worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in IT. Most recently, he held the position of Energy Coordinator for the Town of Falmouth where he still coordinates various energy-related projects. He has taught classes at WHOI, the Oak Bluffs Public Library, Mashpee Senior Center, Falmouth New Comers Club, Falmouth Community School,  Barnstable Senior Center and the Town of Falmouth. 

This in-person event will take place at the Vineyard Haven Library, lower level.

Vineyard Haven Library cardholders have unlimited free access to the online resource Universal Class, the place to continue your education online and fulfill lifelong learning goals. All courses are designed and led by professional instructors and include videos, assignments, quizzes, tests, and options for social media interaction with other learners. Users can take as many classes as they would like and complete classes at their own pace.​

Update on Vineyard Haven Library Services

Due to a higher number of cases of COVID-19 locally and regionally, the Tisbury Health Department has recommended that the library temporarily reintroduce time limits and other precautions in the library building.

For the time being, table seating will be limited, and all patrons are asked to keep their library visits to 30 minutes or less. Use of library computers will be limited to one 30 minute session per day. For patrons needing longer term internet access, the library has WiFi hotspots and Chromebook computers available for checkout.

Throughout the library all patrons over the age of two are required to wear a face covering, regardless of personal vaccination status. If you or a family member are experiencing symptoms of illness including fever, cough, or shortness or breath, please postpone your visit until you are feeling better.

May Schedule for "Express Services" in the Library Building

We are happy to share that the library building is now open limited hours for "Express Services". Our current schedule:

Wednesday: 1 pm to 5 pm
Thursday: 1 pm to 5 pm
Friday: 1 pm to 5 pm
Saturday: 1 pm to 4 pm

The main floor is open for drop in "Grab & Go" materials browsing. Appointments are not needed to browse in the main library but we do ask all patrons to keep their visits brief. Capacity limits will be in place, so please wait outside if requested by a staff member. Masks that cover mouth and nose must be worn by all library visitors over age 2, regardless of vaccination status. Hand sanitizer is provided  and one public restroom will be open for handwashing.

The Children's Room will be open to one family group at a time for 15 minutes, and appointments are suggested. CLICK HERE to see available dates and time slots and to register. 

Our newest and most popular books for children, young adults, and adults are shelved our Express Browsing area near the garden entrance, no appointment required. The basement level will not be accessible, but materials are available by request, and some popular collections have been moved to the main floor.

Computers will be available to library cardholders for one 30-minute session per day, by appointment only, beginning Wednesday May 26th. Please call the library if you wish to schedule a computer appointment. Study tables and seating will not be available inside the building, but patrons are welcome to connect to our WiFi using their personal computers in the library courtyard, where limited seating is available. WiFi hotspots and Chromebook computers are also available to check out for home use.

Contact-free pickup will continue to be available in the library entry vestibule from 12pm to 5pm on Mondays & Tuesdays, with same-day pickup available for items requested by 2pm. Home delivery is also available to qualifying Tisbury residents. 

New “Creative Station” for Entrepreneurs & Creatives

 
Do you want to sharpen your skills in design, video editing, or photography? Are you a small business owner or self-employed artist? Save money on expensive software and use Adobe Creative Cloud suite at the Vineyard Haven Public Library for free! The Vineyard Haven Public Library’s Creative Station is located on the lower level of the library and is a self-directed learning space. Library customers can now save money on Adobe subscription prices and get free access to Adobe's popular apps and services for video, design, photography and web design. The free software includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premier Pro, After Effects and Lightroom.

Beginners to Adobe Creative Cloud can view Adobe workbooks in the library to get acquainted with the software. Vineyard Haven Public Library customers can also use their Vineyard Haven Library card to take free online Adobe courses through Universal Class.

Universal Class: Online Continuing Education Courses

Vineyard Haven Public Library is pleased to announce the availability of the online continuing education service Universal Class. Vineyard Haven cardholders have access to lifelong learning courses in over 30 subject areas, many of which offer continuing education units (CEUs). More than 500 courses are available, and all are designed and led by professional instructors to build deeper understanding and mastery of subject matter. Universal Class includes videos, assignments, quizzes, tests, and options for social media interaction with other learners. Patrons may take multiple classes and learn at their own pace.

From technical courses on computer software to digital photography to babysitting 101, a huge range of topics is available. Universal Class offers courses in Exercise and Fitness, Entrepreneurship, Arts and Music, Home and Garden Care, Cooking, Computers and Technology, Health and Medicine, Homeschooling, Job Assistance, Law and Legal, Parenting and Family, Pet and Animal Care, plus hundreds more.

Print From Home, Pick up at the Library

Vineyard Haven Public Library patrons can now print to the library printer from their mobile device or their internet-enabled computer though the PrinterOn service, from home or in the library. PrinterOn works with our current Envisionware printing system. Print jobs can be emailed, uploaded to a web portal, or sent through a mobile app, available for iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Nook. The apps can be found in your device’s app store or from the PrinterOn website: http://www.printeron.com/apps.html.

Patrons are able to send print jobs from their smartphones or laptops by simply sending an email with an attachment to the unique email address assigned to The library's printer. Patrons can submit documents from wherever they are – on the road, in their home office or in the library. Documents will not be printed until the patron comes to the library and releases their print job within 24 hours during regular library hours. Printing costs are the same from either your mobile device or on a library computer. (Note: You may want to bring the file you wish to print on a flash drive or have it accessible via the cloud just in case there is a problem with the mobile printing system.)

The service supports many file types, including but are not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Adobe PDF, Open Office, and image formats such as TIFF, JPG, PNG, and GIF.

EnvisionWare: Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why did the library purchase EnvisionWare software?

A. EnvisionWare provides equitable access to the public computers by enforcing a time limit for each user when the computers are in high demand and encourages patrons to be more conservative when printing at the library. It also helps the library recover printing costs.

Q. How do I log on a computer?

A. Type in your 13-digit library card number at the logon screen. If you do not have a library card, you may request a one-day, thirty minute guest pass at a library circulation desk.

Q. What if all of the computers are in use?

A. At the Reservation and Printing Station (near the Circulation Desk):

* Click "Make a Reservation"
* Select Next Available PC
* Enter library card number or guest pass number
* Cardholders may choose Internet or Word Processing
* Guest pass holders choose Express
* Accept reservation, and print a receipt.
* At the time indicated, logon to the computer indicated on your receipt

Q. How does EnvisionWare manage time?

A. For library card users, the system will extend computing sessions (after prompting the user) by 20 minute increments when computers are available. For users with guest passes, the system will extend computing sessions (after prompting the user) by 15 minute increments when computers are available.

As reservations are made at the Computer Sign-In Station, there is a chance that the computer a patron is using will become reserved by another patron. The person using the computer will be allowed to use the remaining time on their timer, and then the computer must be relinquished to the patron who has the reservation.

Patrons using a library card are guaranteed an initial 1 hour. Time management beyond the first hour controls how long a library card user can stay on a computer. When computers are full, the system determines which computer(s) are eligible to be reserved based on whose time is "up" first.

Q. Will I receive a warning message before the end of my session?

A. EnvisionWare has a small countdown timer that remains in view.

Q. Can I make a reservation for another day?

A. Patrons with library cards may reserve a computer one day in advance at the Reservation and Printing Station. Reservations will be held for 10 minutes past your scheduled starting time.

Q. How does EnvisionWare manage printing?

A. EnvisionWare uses a print release station to allow users to access and pay for print jobs. You will be asked to enter your library card number at the Reservation and Printing Station. If you used a guest pass to log on the computer, you will enter the guest pass number. Once you have entered your library card number—or guest pass number—the Print Station screen will display your print jobs. Select the job you wish to print and pay using the coin and bill acceptor.

Printing charges are 25 cents per page. The print release station coin box accepts coins as well as $1 and $5 bills. Change is given in quarters only.

To print from your laptop connected to the library wifi, click here to download the print client. Install the client and print as needed. Proceed to the Reservation and Print Station to pay and release your printouts.

Q. Can I lock a computer and come back?

A. Yes. EnvisionWare allows you to lock a computer, but your time continues to count down. If your time runs out while the computer is locked, you will be logged off. If you leave a computer locked for more than 15 minutes, a staff member may end your session so that someone else can use the computer.

Q. Do I need to be concerned about my privacy with EnvisionWare?

A. No, EnvisionWare only keeps track of the time you have spent using the computer during one day. At the end of the day, all patron data is deleted. EnvisionWare provides general reports on computer usage, but the report data is not tied to individual patrons.

New! Early Literacy Station for Ages 2-10

The Vineyard Haven Public Library System has added an Early Literacy Station in the Children's Room, a complete educational solution loaded with 50 educational software titles for kids ages 2–10. The Early Literacy Station offers children a safe, standalone computer not connected to the Internet that is age-appropriate, engaging, and academically relevant for children. The ELS has a colorful keyboard and child-size mouse to promote easy learning and discovery, however children may also interact with the ELS using the touchscreen! Children may sign up to use the ELS for 30 minutes per day.

The Early Literacy Station's educational software covers seven curricular areas: reading, math, science, social studies, writing, arts and music, and reference. The system is designed to attract and educate toddlers through early elementary school ages. The multimedia and educational content has been evaluated by early childhood specialists, educators, and family focus groups using the latest developmental models.

The Early Literacy Station was obtained through generous community support for the Friends of the Library 2011 Annual Appeal.
