Children’s Summer Learning
Children can participate in Summer Reading by doing a Summer Reading Challenge Sheet. Complete a level and win a prize! Contact the Children’s room for more info!

Teen Summer Learning
Teens can win prizes by picking up a scratch-off ticket, up to once a day when they check out a book. Contact Young Adult Librarian Jennifer for more info!

TEENS

Mondays from 3-5, Chill Zone in the program room for ages 12 and up. A relaxed hang out for teens with Nintendo Switch, Crafts, Games, Laptops, & More

Cartooning Workshops for Teens & Tweens!

 

Fridays from 11 am to 12:30 pm
July 22nd, July 29th, and August 5th

Tweens & Teens can join our special guest Ryan Barr for one or more sessions of this three week cartooning workshop.

The classes will be indoors while the library is closed*. The classes are free and all materials will be provided.

Summer Reading for Children and Teens!

Visit the library beginning on Monday 6/27 to sign up for our annual Summer Reading program for children and teens! Pre-Reader Summer Reading Pre-Readers, best suited for ages 0-5, can participate in Summer Reading by doing a Family Bingo card! Each time one row is completed, pre-readers can come to the library to select a prize.  School Age Summer Reading School Age Readers, best suited for ages 6-12, can participate in Summer Reading by doing a Summer Reading Log. When signing up, readers will set their reading goal for the Summer. When the reading goal is complete, you can select a prize at the Vineyard Haven Library.  Teen Summer Reading Teens can earn prizes by completing squares on our summer challenge sheet! Teens & Tweens: Participate in Battle of the Books!

This summer, Teens and Tweens can participate in the Martha's Vineyard Library Association's island-wide "Battle of the Books!" Participants read up to 6 books for their age group, and compete in a trivia contest over Zoom to win 1st, 2nd, & 3rd prize gift certificates from Bunch of Grapes.

Registration is required for these events that will take place online via Zoom. A week before the event, all registrants will receive an email with specific details on how to participate. See sign up information and books lists for for each age group below:

Registration for the Summer Reading Program at the Vineyard Haven Public Library begins Monday, June 26th. Children may visit the library to sign up, log the books they read, and earn prizes including a T-shirt and gift certificates from local businesses. Teens ages 12 to 18 can register online, then visit the library to claim a prize just for signing up.

The Martha's Vineyard Library Association is hosting a FREE event to kick off the Summer Reading Program. On Saturday, July 1st, Jungle Jim will perform at the Agricultural Hall at 35 Panhandle Road in West Tisbury. Jungle Jim's 45-minute action-packed performance will include balloon artistry, magic, comedy and improv. Doors open at 10:30am; performance at 11am.

Free programs for young children at Vineyard Haven Library will include a visit by storybook character Olivia, musical story times with Ellen Allard, Jeremy Berlin, Hugh Hanley, and Joyce Maxner, yoga storytime with Anne Caldwell, Drumming workshop with Rick Bausman, and a performance by Nappy's Puppets. Older kids can participate in weekly crafting and maker programs, robotics, cartooning classes with Andy Fish, lantern painting for Illumination Night, and gaming including an "Escape Room" adventure. Vineyard Haven Library also has a Summer Reading Program for “Grownups”. Adults who keep track of their reading are eligible to win gift certificates and other prizes sponsored by the Friends of the Library. To participate, pick up a Summer Reading bookmark at the Library, read at least one book in a category of your choosing, and hand in your bookmark including your name and contact information. Prize drawings will be held at the end of July & August.

Teens ages 12 to 18 can register online. Teens who register online can visit the library circulation desk to claim a prize, just for signing up.

The Martha's Vineyard Library Association is hosting a special event to kick off the Summer Reading Program. On Saturday, July 5th, comic juggler Bill Ross will perform at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury at 11am. This family event will also feature face painting, popcorn, and all around fun. Admission is $4; doors open at 10:30am.

Free programs for children at VH Library this summer include a concert by Ellen Allard for ages 4 and up on July 8th at 11am, musical story times with Joyce Maxner on Tuesday July 15th at 10am and 11am, and concerts by Jeremy Berlin on July 22nd at 10am and 11am. Marvelous Marvin will bring circus arts, magic and music to the library on August 7 at 4pm. On Wednesday August 6th, visit the "Whalemobile", a life-sized inflatable humpback whale. Children can go inside the whale, hear the sounds of different species of whales, touch real whale parts, and learn how to help protect these animals (at the Tisbury School). These events are made possible by a contribution from The Anderson Foundation.

Additional special guests planned for children's programs include Kathy Forrester, Emily Solarazza, Phyllis Vecchia, storybook character Ladybug Girl, and Susie Bowman from Felix Neck. Details will be available at the library and on our website, www.vhlibrary.org.

For the fourth year, the Vineyard Haven Library is offering a Summer Reading Program for “Grownups”. Adults who keep track of their summer reading will be eligible to win a gift certificate and other prizes sponsored by the Friends of the Library. To participate, patrons should create an online account by visiting the library homepage. Patrons may log the books they read over the summer, write reviews, and register for prizes.

Teens -- Get Your Voice Heard at VHPL!

Want kinds of programs do YOU want to see at the library? What books are YOU reading? Any new games YOU want the library to buy? Get your voice heard at VHPL. Special August Events for Kids and Teens

On Thursday August 12th at 3:30 PM, special guest storyteller Diane Edgecomb visits, for kids 5 and up. That evening from 6 PM to 7:30 PM, the library will host a special party just for Teen Summer Reading Program participants.

On Saturday August 14th from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, there will be a special Drop-in Crafts for ages 5 and up featuring Illumination Night and Agricultural Fair crafts.

Every Tuesday, enjoy library story times with stories, songs, rhymes, fun for ages 0-2 at 10 AM, and for ages 3-5 at 11 AM. Special guests this month include singer, songwriter and guitarist Julie Austin on August 17th, and musician Jeremy Berlin on August 24th.

Free Movies and Popcorn will be shown throughout the month. On Wednesday August 18th at 3 PM, see an anime film by Hayoa Miyazaki about a young boy befriending a goldfish princess for kids ages 6 and up. On Thursday August 26th, at 3 PM, we will show an award-winning animated film about a robot trying to find his way home, for kids ages 4 and up.

On Thursday August 26th, at 6 PM, the Teen Book Club meets and views a movie for grades 6 and up. This month's selection: The Whale Rider by Witi Tame Ihimaera. Read the book and come watch the related film. Refreshments provided.

The Library Chess Club for ages 6 and up meets weekly on Tuesdays from 6 PM to 7 PM.

There will be no programs on Thursday, August 19th, during the annual Agricultural Fair.
