Register for Phil Weinstein's Seminar "American Baroque"

Beginning in September, Philip Weinstein, the Alexander Griswold Cummins Professor of Literature emeritus at Swarthmore College, will present a six-part workshop entitled American Baroque, on Melville’s Moby Dick and Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! The series will be presented at the Katharine Cornell Theater, 54 Spring Street, Vineyard Haven, on Wednesday evenings at 7pm. Professor Weinstein will cover Moby Dick on September 7th, 21st, and 28th, and Absalom, Absalom! on November 2nd, 16th, and 30th.

Professor Weinstein describes these two works as "larger than life, harder to read than any bestseller, yet unforgettable once you’ve made them yours. Making them yours is labor, but as you succeed in making your way in, it can become a labor of love. Our three September sessions on Melville, like our later three on Faulkner, aim to enable your journey."

Professor Weinstein will use Norton's 2nd Critical Edition for Moby Dick, and the 1966 corrected edition of Absolum, Absolum! A limited number of copies will be on reserve at the library, or may be requested through CLAMS. In order to allow the library to prepare class materials and communicate with students, please register in advance at the library or by visiting our website at www.vhlibrary.org.

Try Encore, a New Way to Search the CLAMS Catalog

When you visit the CLAMS Catalog you will be invited to try our new "Encore" Search.

Based on feedback from library patrons, CLAMS has added an intuitive, yet powerful search option that includes features common to search engines such as Google, commercial web sites, and social networking sites. It is a new way to search for books, DVDs, digital titles, etc. in the CLAMS libraries.  Encore is particularly powerful when you begin with a broad search and want to narrow it down.

Encore integrates the patron’s OverDrive eBook checkouts and holds into “My Account” and allows access to full-text articles from Gale General OneFile, an online reference resource provided through the state. For more details, please visit the CLAMS Encore Help Page.
