MV Commission Regional Transportation Plan Survey

The Martha’s Vineyard Commission is updating its Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) for 2024-2044, which provides an opportunity for the public to comment on how regional transportation projects and funding in Dukes County are prioritized over the next 20 years. As part of this process, the MVC has launched an online survey that we hope you will take a few minutes to fill out before June 23.The survey can be accessed by clicking the following URL:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2024RTPsurvey

The RTP is one of the primary transportation planning documents maintained by the MVC, along with the shorter-term Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and Martha’s Vineyard Public Participation Plan. The RTP is updated every four years and includes detailed analysis of the transportation network, specific objectives and actions related to each transportation mode (automobile, bike, ferry, etc.), and proposed funding allocations over the next 20 years. The previous RTP from 2019 is available here:

Art by African Americans: From the Protest of the ‘60s to the Age of Black Lives Matter

At the dawn of the Civil Rights Movement, African American artists were inspired not only to create amazing works, but to agitate for fundamental change in the art world. After being marginalized and ignored for so long, they demanded greater representation of their work in museums, as well as the inclusion of African American scholars and curators in the ranks of museum professionals. Join our virtual art talk with Janet Mandel to celebrate the rich contributions these pioneers made to American culture, and see some of the work that continues to astonish art lovers today.

Janet Mandel taught in New Jersey’s public schools for 32 years, where she taught English, art history, World Languages and Cultures. Now retired, Janet presents illustrated talks on a variety of art historytopics at adult schools, libraries, museums, senior centers, community centers, and similar venues.

This live online event will not be recorded. To register or for more information, contact library Program Coordinator Anne McDonough at vhpl_programs@clamsnet.org

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library and other Martha's Vineyard libraries.

Author Talk: Tom Dresser's "Martha's Vineyard in the Roaring 20s"

[In-person]
6pm Tuesday June 6th
Author Talk: Martha's Vineyard in the Roaring Twenties

The Roaring Twenties were filled with a range of events, experiences, fears, laws and advances that impacted Martha's Vineyard. Island residents were involved in rumrunning. Dozens died of the Spanish Flu. Women voted on Island. Dorothy West joined the Harlem Renaissance. Immigration from the Azores slowed, and airplanes landed in Katama. Tourism blossomed and business boomed.

In his latest book, Martha's Vineyard in the Roaring Twenties: Radicals & Rascals, local author Thomas Dresser shares the back story and the import of this remarkable decade and how it has shaped Vineyarders.

Thomas Dresser lives on Martha's Vineyard, and this is his fifteenth book for The History Press about the island.
