Special Event with the Author of "The Paris Library"

Vineyard Haven Library patrons are invited to join a special event sponsored by the Eldredge Public Library in Chatham!

Janet Skeslien Charles will join us via Zoom from Paris for a discussion of her best-selling novel, The Paris Library, published in 2021. Based on the true World War II story of the heroic librarians at the American Library in Paris, The Paris Library is a book for lovers of books and libraries and historical fiction. In Paris, 1939, young and ambitious Odile Souchet seems to have the perfect life with her handsome police officer beau and a dream job at the American Library in Paris. When the Nazis march into the city, together with her fellow librarians, Odile joins the Resistance with the best weapons she has: books. Switch to Montana, 1983, Lily is a lonely teenager looking for adventure in small-town Montana. Her interest is piqued by her solitary, elderly neighbor, Odile. As Lily uncovers more about her neighbor's mysterious past, she finds that they share a love of language, the same longings, and the same intense jealousy, never suspecting that a dark secret from the past connects them.

Janet Skeslien Charles is the award-winning author of Moonlight in Odessa and The Paris Library. Her shorter work has appeared in revues such as Slice and Montana Noir. She learned about the history of the American Library in Paris while working there as the programs manager. She divides her time between Montana and Paris.

Registration is required for this Zoom program. Register

Virtual Music Event: Women in Jazz

Virtual: Women in Jazz
6:30 PM  Thursday April 7th

Women have been involved in Jazz since the early 1920s, not only as vocalists, but also as instrumentalists, composers, and arrangers. An understanding of jazz would not be complete without highlighting the influence and contributions of these women. Join us to learn about the personal and professional lives of women musicians in a time when many considered jazz “a man’s world”. Galen will explore a full spectrum of years, genre, recordings, and recognized achievements. The program will include live performances by Galen Abdur-Razzaq, a renowned flautist, and samples of the artists’ music. A Q&A will follow.

Galen is an extraordinary flautist with an extensive performance career. He is also a riveting speaker on the topic of jazz, and has performed and lectured at colleges and universities for over thirty years. A former educator, he holds a Master's Degree from Rutgers University in Education and Performing Arts, and he studied music at Berklee school of Music in Boston. Embracing his love of music and desire to continue educating, he offers an engaging and enjoyable path to music appreciation through music programs comprised of music performances, and lectures. He aims to provide  attendees with an understanding and appreciation of jazz and its historical significance--a true American Heritage.

Sponsored by Vineyard Haven Library with the Chilmark, Centerville, Truro, and Snow (Orleans) libraries.

Virtual: Memoir 101 Workshop with Moira Silva

Writing that flows - The Martha's Vineyard Times

Isn't it time you told your story? Starting March 23rd, Vineyard Haven Library will host a four-week online memoir workshop series with Moira Silva on Wednesdays from 10:30am-12pm via Zoom. Through a blend of exercises, readings, and discussions, writers will connect with their writing and themselves. Participants will form a supportive community while sharing in-process work, with the group honoring whatever is created — whether it is an essay, song, letter, or entirely new genres. Writers will leave the course lighter in spirit and richer in purpose.

Moira Convey Silva is a writing instructor, writing consultant, yoga teacher, community activist, and award-winning writer who, for over 10 years, has freelanced for national and local periodicals. Focusing on features and essays, especially ones that relate to sustainability, Silva’s writing most notably appears in the Boston Globe, Women’s Running and Taproot. Silva is a co-creative producer of Covid Monologues MV: A Project to Nourish, Inspire & Connect.

Space is limited, to sign up contact library Program Coordinator Anne McDonough at amcdonough@clamsnet.org. Participants are asked to commit to all four sessions.

Library Face Mask Policy Update

POLICY UPDATE APRIL 1st 2022

To protect the unvaccinated and those at risk for serious illness, face masks are highly encouraged when visiting the library. Masks are required for ages 5 and up when attending indoor programs and for reference and tech help appointments.

The Martha's Vineyard Boards of Health will no longer mandate the use of face masks in indoor public spaces while the CDC's COVID-19 Community Level for Dukes County remains low.

The library will maintain COVID precautions appropriate to our building and user needs. Currently, in order to provide an environment where at-risk individuals can safely access all library services, face masks are required for visitors and staff.

The Library Board of Trustees will be reviewing this policy at an upcoming meeting, and we would appreciate your feedback. Please share your preference for an updated mask policy for the library by answering a one-question survey:
