Martha's Vineyard Photography Club Group Show

This June, members of the Martha's Vineyard Photography Club will showcase their work in the 5th annual group art show at the Vineyard Haven Public Library. The show is sponsored by the Friends of the Library, who will host an opening reception on Tuesday, June 2nd from 6 - 7:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.

The show will be open during regular library hours, June 1st -June 13th. Featured photographers include Harvey Beth, Suzanne Boyer, Peter Dreyer, Phyllis Dunn, Kay Leaird, Michelle Manfredi, Sara Piazza, Sharon Simonin, Norm Stickney, Maria Thibodeau, Scott Tuttle, and Nathalie Woodruff.

The Martha's Vineyard Photo Club meets monthly at the Vineyard Haven Public Library on the first Thursday of each month at 6pm. The club is open and welcoming to photographers of all kinds and all levels. Club activities include photo sharing, presentations on various aspects of photography (drawing on the expertise of club members and outside sources), and field trips, as well as other areas of group interest.

In addition to the annual group show in June, Vineyard Haven Public Library's "Art in the Stacks" space features rotating monthly exhibits managed by the Friends of the Library. The library also has a collection of artworks that are displayed throughout the year, including 12 paintings by Vineyard artist Captain John Ivory.

Memorial Day Week: Schedule and Special Events

The Vineyard Haven Public Library will be closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 25th.

On Monday, the town of Tisbury hosts a Memorial Day Picnic from noon to 4 pm on the grounds of the restored Tashmoo Spring Building on West Spring Street off State Road. Entertainment will include live music by the Flying Elbows, supported by the MV Cultural Council, as well as outdoor games, pony rides, chalk art, rowboat rides, and tours of the Spring Building.

On Tuesday, May 26th, at 11am, the Library will have a special guest performance for children. Kids of all ages are welcome to sing-a-long with Nappy’s Puppets. Jim Napolitano is a shadow puppeteer who integrates story telling with singing to keep his young audience engaged. This event is free to the public through the generous sponsorship of the Anderson Foundation and the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library.

New: Access to 68 Language Courses Online!

The Vineyard Haven Public Library now provides a new way to learn a language! Mango Languages is an online language-learning system teaching actual conversation skills. You can access Mango from your home computer or mobile device, and login using your library card. Library patrons now have access to 68 languages and 17 ESL courses. Holiday Closing and CLAMS System Maintenance April 20th

The Vineyard Haven Library and other CLAMS libraries will be closed on Monday, April 20th due to the Patriots Day holiday.

While the libraries are closed that day, CLAMS will be performing system maintenance on our servers. The CLAMS Catalog, Overdrive download services, and some other online services will be unavailable for most of the day (from approximately 6:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.).

Early Closing April 14th due to Town Meeting

Vineyard Haven Library will close early on Tuesday, April 14th, due to the Tisbury Annual and Special Town Meetings that will take place that evening at the Tisbury School Auditorium at 7pm. The Library will close at 6:30pm, and library computers will be shut down at 6:00pm.

Volunteer opportunity: Art Show Coordinator

The Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library are seeking a volunteer to assist with management of the monthly "Art in the Stacks" exhibit at the library.

Responsibilities:

• Recruiting artists for small monthly shows at the library
• Maintaining schedule and guestbook
• Communicating with artists about setup and removal of their exhibits
• Coordinating with Library staff on publicity and logistics

Chef's Cooking Series Will Honor Friend of the Library

This spring, the Vineyard Haven Public Library will hold a series of free cooking classes by some of the best-known chefs on the Island. The demonstrations offered over the next few months will feature three different types of chefs, who will show how they prepare some of their favorite dishes. Participants will have the opportunity to sample the dishes and learn recipes and techniques to try at home.

All programs will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6-8pm. Attendance for each class is limited to 30 people, and pre-registration for each program is required. Advance registration will be in person at the library, or through our online calendar.

The series will kick off on Wednesday, March 25th, featuring Doug Smith, restaurateur of Lucky Hank’s. Jaime Hamlin from Jaime Hamlin and Sons Catering will present on April 8th, and Cathy Walthers, a private chef and author of four cookbooks, will conclude the series with her program on May 6th.

This series has been made possible by donations given to the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Public Library in memory of Laurel H. Chapman. Mrs. Chapman was a long-time officer of the Friends, and for several years she recruited presenters and organized refreshments for the Friends' Sunday afternoon programs at the Library.

Laurel Chapman was known by her friends as someone who loved to cook, using every occasion to have a tea or celebration, and she loved to dine out. When the Friends of the Library received a number of generous donations in Laurel’s memory, they agreed that the best way to honor her would be to provide funding for a first-class cooking series. The Library plans to make the Laurel H. Chapman Cooking Series an annual event, supported by the Friends of the Library.
