W.S. Merwin has been chosen to succeed Kay Ryan as the 17th Poet Laureate of the United States. The Poet Laureate is appointed annually by the Librarian of Congress and serves from October to May.Merwin has received numerous awards for his poetry and translations, including the National Book Award for Poetry in 2005, the Tanning Prize from the Academy of American Poets in 1994, and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1971 and 2009.
