Art in the Stacks featuring Leaf Art by Emily Davis

 

The Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library are pleased to present an exhibit of Leaf Art by Emily Davis, on display in the lower level of the library during regular library hours throughout September. 

Emily Davis is a horticulturalist, committed to an art practice that combines her many passions. Using pressed leaves, scissors, and an LED light board, Emily creates temporary works of art that she preserves through digital photography. Emily's art is characterized by her attention to detail and subject selection, including species and design. More information about leaf art can be found online at www.edleaves.com.

Art in the Stacks is an initiative of the Friends of the Library to provide artists an opportunity to show their work, and for library patrons to enjoy art throughout the year. Beginning at 2:00 PM on Monday September 9th, the four-part series will cover a new topic each week, ranging from networking and emotional intelligence to how to use Linkedin and YouMap® software. This series is sponsored by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven and Tewksbury Libraries.

Meet Liz Shick, Library Program Planner & Debut Author of "The Golden Land"

On Tuesday September 17th at 6pm, join the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library for an author talk celebrating the release of The Golden Land, the debut novel by Elizabeth (Liz) Shick. Liz will recount the six years she lived in Myanmar, an extraordinary period of growth and democratization sandwiched between two authoritarian military regimes (1962-2011 and 2021-present), and explain how those experiences inspired her to write The Golden Land. Refreshments will follow the talk.

Winner of the AWP Prize for the Novel, The Golden Land is a novel that digs deep into the complexities of family history and relationships, with the explosive history of Myanmar as its backdrop. The novel explores themes of freedom, resistance, culture, and identity. It is written in a dual timeline (1988 and 2011), and alternates between Boston, Massachusetts, and Yangon, Myanmar (formerly known as Rangoon, Burma).

Liz Shick is an award-winning novelist whose writing is influenced by her many years abroad, including six years in Myanmar. She holds a master of fine arts from Lesley University and a master of international affairs from Columbia University.

Liz joined the staff of the Vineyard Haven Public Library as Adult Program Coordinator in 2024. At the library, Liz is responsible for envisioning, planning and hosting programs for adults, both in-person and virtual, including lectures and author talks, book clubs, performances, workshops, and more. She also coordinates the rotating art shows at the library.

Healthy Aging and Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

On Tuesday, September 24th at 6:00 p.m., in recognition of World Alzheimer’s Day, the Vineyard Haven Library will host, “Healthy Aging and Prevention of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia,” a presentation by Dr. Nicole Absar.

Attendees will learn about the different stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, including various cognitive health interventions that can help prevent and slow down the disease process, maintain brain health, and assist in healthy aging. World Alzheimer's Day, which takes place on the 21st of September, is a global effort to raise awareness and challenge the stigma around Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Nicole Absar, MD is a Cognitive/Behavioral Neurologist at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital's new Neurocognitive Clinic, where she provides diagnostic evaluation and management services for neurocognitive disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia, and other neurocognitive disorders. She is also a health activist, who has participated in national networking efforts to address neurological issues with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. in order to bring about necessary change in legislation and patient advocacy.

Dr. Absar  is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (ABPN). She is a member of the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (FAPA). She is also a certified yoga teacher, who has integrated yoga therapy and mindfulness into neurocognitive brain health interventions for the prevention of vascular risk factors associated with stroke, heart disease, and forms of dementia.

Virtual African Art Series

Spend one Sunday afternoon each month learning the wonders of African Art. Jean Borgatti, Consulting Curator for African, Oceanic, and Native American Art at the Fitchburg Art Museum, will delve into a different aspect of African Art each month, including its variety of forms, the depth of its history, and how it became an important player in Western culture and across the globe. A reading list will be available for those who want to delve more deeply into any one topic. Jean Borgatti will also invite participants to an online workspace where she will post additional images, articles, and videoclips for anyone interested. The Fitchburg Art Museum will also provide a limited number of free passes as part of this series. Please contact the library for more information.

Discover the History of your Vineyard House

 

On Tuesday, September 10th at 6:00 p.m., the Vineyard Haven Library will host “Discover the History of your Vineyard House,” a how-to presentation by house historian Marian Pierre-Louis. This in-person event is sponsored by the Friends of the Vineyard Haven Library, and refreshments will be provided. 

This talk is designed for anyone who ever wondered about the history of their Vineyard house but didn’t know where to begin. The presentation will outline the main steps to researching the unique history of any house, including how to determine age and style, where to obtain other key information, and how to uncover other fascinating details about both the house and its former occupants.

Marian Pierre-Louis has researched hundreds of houses across Massachusetts and New England over the past 25 years. She has contributed chapters to The Stories Houses Tell – A Collection of Little Compton [RI] House Histories (2015) and A Second Collection of Little Compton House Histories (2022). She also penned the "Old House Secrets" column in the Medway & Millis Local Town Pages. 

Marian teaches classes and workshops designed to empower homeowners to research the history of their homes. She also publishes articles and other resources about researching the history of a house on her website, the Northeast House Historian (https://northeasthousehistorian.com/).
